First of the Southern Comfort Series was a huge success. There were 34 riders in three divisions.
Saturday's weather was a balmy 60 degrees and Sunday's rain made us happy that we were in a covered arena. We started out with clinics on Saturday morning to help riders become acquainted with MGAA equipment and the USPC games that will be used at Championships this summer.
The USPC International Games team provided the concessions through out the weekend, and kept all riders well fed. After lunch the teams were ready to play games and we started with the Novice division. Kickin' Chickens were scratching for every
point, G.R.I.T.S. (Girls Raised in the Saddle) came on strong to lead the division after 15 races and win the division on Sunday. Oy were led by Julia Nicopoulous, literally, as her teammates were learning the races for the first time.
Next came the Fossils pairs with quite a mixture of Old and New, Bustin' and or Loose with a Zippy Chickie and a Hatchling thrown in. Old and New had the
lead after 15 races. On Sunday, Bustin' Loose got on track, the Hatchling got her pony to go more straight than sideways and the Old and New were trying to
look more New and New. Zippie Chickie and the Hatchling came out on top, followed by Old and New and Bustin' Loose with a vow to "see you all at the
start line again"!
The Masters division teams went all out with the Punk Rock Ponies taking a commanding lead in to Sunday. Hip Huggers, Fat Penguins and Carolina
Girls battled back and forth for two days and after 27 races the Hip Huggers and Fat Penguins were tied for second. Fat Penguins pulled away with the
last three races and took second with Hip Huggers third and Carolina Girls fourth.
