Southern Comfort Series #2
Organizer: Susan Melvin

Pendleton, South Carolina
December 3/4, 2005

The Second Southern Comfort Series was a repeat of the First … a huge success!   We had 32 riders in two divisions, including seven riders on Icelandic Horses from Bearwood Farm who were new to Mounted Games.  Everyone had a fit over the Icelandics and more than one person was overheard plotting a way to take one home.  It was exciting to have so many riders from out of state … seven riders from Georgia, three from North Carolina, two from Pennsylvania, three from Virginia, and three from Maryland.  Thank goodness for the covered arena, as we had unseasonably cold weather and RAIN on Saturday.   Sunday was a bit milder, but it was still rainy most of the day.

Michelle Reilly gave two excellent clinics on Saturday morning. She had her hands full with the Novice Group, since we had seven new riders, so she drafted several Masters Riders for help. By the end of the clinic “The Icelandics” were looking good!  The Masters Clinic was full of very experienced riders and they had a ball.

The USPC International Games team provided the concessions through out the weekend, and kept all riders well fed. The motto of Southern Comfort is “Don’t Get Weak” and returning riders were pleased to find familiar fare, most notably the famous triple chocolate brownies, which, according to Masters Rider D Sargent, are the key ingredient to excellent games play.

After lunch the teams were ready to play games and we started with the Novice division. The Egg Beaters showed their experience in games and they did great. On Day 1, The Icelandics were divided into two teams “Mama Bears” and “Baby Bears” with a member of the Egg Beaters filling in as the fourth rider.  On Day 2, the Icelandics all rode together.  The Egg Beaters won the competition handily with 57 points, and the Bears came in second with a combined total of 40 points.

Next came the Masters Division …. WOW!!!   The thundering hooves and the lightning fast hand-offs certainly showcased the vast experience of this group. Team Extreme led the division on Day 1 with 49 points, followed by B.O. (which means “Blue & Orange” and NOT Body Odor!) with 40 points. The Clucks  had 33 points and the Mustangs brought up the rear with 27 points. On Day 2, the standings were the same, with Team Extreme winning the competition with 96 points; B. O.  in second with 76 points; followed by The Clucks with 70 points and the Mustangs with 54 points.

$600.00 was raised for the 2006 International Team from the competition entries, along with $629.00 gross proceeds from concessions.  J Maddox and J Schenck, both members of the Team, along with R Whitehair, first alternate, will all benefit from these funds.

Many thanks for all who came out, worked and supported this fundraiser. Particular gratitude to Michelle Reilly who came all the way from Maryland to run this competition for us, along with the other long distance out-of-towners:  Christine Reilly, A Knapp, C Rutledge,  the Calhouns, the Whitehairs, the Schencks, and the Schellings.  Many thanks to Frank of Double J Arena who once again made sure that we had a top-notch facility!
