Thundering Hooves:
Equestrian Mounted Games On The Washington, D.C. Mall
There were plenty of thundering hooves on
the Mall in Washington, DC on Sunday, June 15th. MGAA hosted a
mounted games exhibition with 40 riders at the old Polo Grounds in DC.
Eight teams competed at once. This year we made the Washington Post's
Bet Picks for the weekend so we actually had an audience all day.
Some were disappointed when we had to take a lunch break!
Robert Taylor, Referee, was once again efficient in
his starts. Janey Lawrence and Nancy Harmon did a fantastic job as
Line A Judges. Sharon Brown and Kristi Mitchell used all their
fingers and toes when adding up the scores. Claudia Stewart and
Patti Naji did a wonderful job backing up Janey one the other side of
Line A. We also had a fantastic crew of assistant refs:
Kathy Taylor, Stacey Calhoun, Andrea Cone, Laura Karns, Julie Whitehair,
Kris Kepner, Colleen Corrigan and Diane Hickok.
I don't know what Curtis Schelling ate
for breakfast but he was in fine voice as our Announcer. He kept
the riders and the audience entertained all day !!
Thanks also to Charlie Hickok and all
those parents and friends who helped set up the gigantic field and keep
the games running smoothly.
Susan Melvin gets a big thank you for
organizing and setting up the pot-luck lunch. There was plenty of
variety and plenty of food for all. We probably could have feed
most of the audience too! Thanks to her helpers, Laura Karns,
Christine Brennan, and Sharon DeMaranville.
Thanks also to all those parents, riders,
and friends who pitched in where and when help was needed. I would
like to thank all those riders and parents who carried all the equipment
back and forth from the trailer parking area to the arena.
Thanks also for picking up all the 'leavings" in the parking area and
the arena throughout the day. This will certainly ensure an invite
back next year.
